Legal Planning in Dementia

Description

Most dementia patients in Malaysia are not being identified and managed timely manner. Legal planning becomes a key task for care partners in view of the diminishing mental capacity and competence of the person living with dementia. Care partners of people living with dementia appeared helpless and stressed with limited resources available. Writing wills and legal planning are always perceived as procedures that can be afforded by rich families only. And yet, if the care partner does not navigate the legal space successfully, dementia care and end-of-life care may deviate from their loved one’s wishes and create additional burdens for the care partner.
